About us

Fencibles

Howick itself is named after Viscount Howick, who was the Secretary for the Colonies in the British Parliament. The suburb was established in 1847 as a Fencible settlement, where soldiers were given land with the implied understanding that in wartime, they would be raised as units to defend it.

The village of Howick was developed as a service centre for the prosperous farming community  and the wider Howick area has experienced rapid growth and significant urban development in recent decades.
